Letters from London

Dear Readers

I have welcomed a new arrival into my life this month – a sewing machine. Well, not exactly new, it was made in the mid 1960’s. It’s aqua blue, shiny and all metal. Ever since coming to London I’ve wanted to have my own sewing machine, but with moving, sharing houses, or living in a hotel, the time wasn’t right.

I’ve finally settled into my own flat and have sorted out most of the furniture. I’ve spent time doing every imaginable craft except sewing, so it was finally time to welcome the siren’s call of the Singer.

Over a year ago, I had looked in a second hand Singer shop. I wanted a model just like the one I grew up using – the first professional grade Singer from the early 1960’s. My mother had bought it for herself before she got married and it’s lasted ever since.

My mom always advised if there was any large purchase I wanted to make, to do it before I got married. Had she waited, she probably would have been talked into buying a cheaper model that wouldn’t have lasted.

Back to the second hand shop, I couldn’t afford the machine a year ago, but this year I thought I could, so I went back to try it out. The owner said he had to get it from the backroom and he’d call me when it was ready. Two weeks went by. They never called. You'd think they didn't need the business. My mother advised I look on the internet – gum something or other, maybe a tree. Gumtree! The next day I’d found my match – a Singer just slightly older than my mother’s for $30. The owner had posted it a while ago and had received a lot of calls, but no one had actually paid it a visit. I went the next day.

There were children and cats everywhere. The machine sat in the middle of the living room floor. I could hear it silently pleading for me to take me home. It’s stitch might not be perfectly straight and it’s cord might be a bid fiddly, but I knew it was meant to be.

Now every Saturday morning is like Christmas. I can’t wait to get out of bed and start having fun.

Miss Singer now enjoys a peaceful home with pride of place on the dining room table. I, however, am now living in a state of creative frenzy and my living room has turned into a sweatshop with fabric and sewing supplies crowding the floor and sofa. But you know, that’s how Miss Singer and I like it.

Happy Sewing!
Michele

p.s. - lots of sewing projects coming soon.
