Teddy Roosevelt in Paris

While in Paris on Saturday and came across a quote from a speech by Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt which he gave to students at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1910.

"It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by the dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions and spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who, at worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly; so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat."

There might be a lot of broken cookies and spilt cocktails along the way, but here at Extremely Crafty, we strive to do great things. We strive to do great crafts. We strive to sew a perfect teddy and with every stitch, we’ll remember we must work toward our dreams no matter how difficult or messy they may be.

Instructions for Teddy Bags & Teddies

Perfect for a teddy bear picnic!

Materials

Bag
Cut a length of fabric 28” x 24” for bag
¼ yard fabric for bear and bear appliqué
Machine embroidery thread

Handles
Cut a length of fabric 4” wide by (22” for short handles or 35” for long handles)

Bag Instructions

1. At each end of the bag fabric, sew a 2” hem.

2. To sew the handles, turn in ½” seams on both sides, fold together in middle and edge stitch together.

3. Handles may also be made by sewing a tube and top stitching.

4. Sew the bottom side of one handle and turn right side out on a stick.

5. Iron handles flat.

6. Position handles on bag in desired spot equidistant from the sides and approximately 2” from top of bag.

7. Turn each handle over ¼” at the bottom. Sew to bag.

8. Repeat for second handle.

9. For appliqué, iron fusible web to fabric. Draw and cut out bear pattern. Iron onto the front right side of bag.

10. Zig zag or satin stitch around edge to secure.

11. Sew sides of bag together.

12. To make a French (hidden) seam, sew edge of bag together on the right side with a ¼” seam allowance. Trim close to the stitching. Turn bag inside out and sew edge seams down. Turn bag to right side and clip stray threads.

Bear Instructions

1. Trace pattern on fabric. Cut out two bears, place right sides together and sew with a ¼” seam. Leave an opening to stuff. Fill with stuffing. Sew opening together.
