Bear in a Bag

Children love bears and they love having their own tote bag. Why not combine the two and make a unique Christmas present of a bear in a bag? This Extremely Crafty idea is for those who want to make something handmade, but have limited time. Make the bag. Buy the bear. This bear was bought during a California road trip many years ago.

Materials
Cut a length of fabric 28” x 12” for bag
Bear appliqué
Machine embroidery thread for appliqué
Fusible webbing
Thread for regular stitching

Handles - Cut a length of fabric 4” wide by (22” for short handles or 35” for long handles)

The finished bag will measure approximately 11” wide x 12” long.

Bag Instructions

1. At each end of the length of bag fabric, sew a 2” hem.

2. To sew the handles, turn in ½” seams on both sides, fold together in middle and edge stitch together.

3. Handles may also be made by sewing a tube and top stitching. If this method is chosen, sew the bottom side of one handle and turn right side out on a stick.

4. Iron handles flat.

5. Position handles on bag in desired spot equidistant from the sides and approximately 2” from top of bag.

6. Turn each handle over ¼” at the bottom. Sew to bag.

7. For appliqué, iron fusible web to wrong side of desired appliqué fabric. Draw and cut out bear pattern or use fabric with a pre-printed bear like this one. Just cut around it and iron onto the front right side of bag.

8. Zig zag or satin stitch around edge to secure appliqué.

9. Sew sides of bag together.

10. To make a French (hidden) seam, sew edge of bag together on the right side with a ¼” seam allowance. Trim close to the stitching. Turn bag inside out and sew edge seams down. Turn bag to right side and clip stray threads.

p.s. - Some Craftsanity subscribers might recognize this project. Same pattern. Different fabric.
